Administrator The City of
Preston requires building permits for many construction
activities, including but not limited to:
- Building or adding to a garage
- Decks
- Garden/utility sheds
- House/building additions
(any construction that adds to the footprint of
the structure)
- Fences/retaining walls
Please call City Hall (507) 765-2153 to
check if your project requires a building permit.
The City of Preston has adopted a Floodplain
Ordinance as part of a program that makes FEMA flood insurance
available to our residents. In order to minimize future flood
losses, the floodplain ordinance closely regulates construction
activities in the floodplain. It is strongly suggested that
property owners contact city hall before starting any
project in the floodplain. It is the
responsibility of the homeowner to contact City Hall and
determine whether a building permit is required for work to be
done. Some P&Z questions (setbacks, permitted uses, etc.) may be
easily answered by referring to the 'Land
Use' section of the Preston Code.
